What is Ai SEO?

If you’re in the digital marketing world, you’ve likely heard the term AI SEO being thrown around, but what does it actually mean?

Artificial Intelligence Search Engine Optimisation (AI SEO) refers to using AI tools and AI-driven insights to improve a website’s visibility in search engines. As well as optimising content for AI-powered search experiences.

It’s a modern evolution of SEO that would have thrown us even a decade ago; today, avoiding it could leave you trailing behind.

So, how does AI SEO fit into our more traditional practices?

Improving efficiencies, not strategies

As we all know, the power of AI is incredible. But much like other areas of marketing, the key is that it remains human-led.

AI is the perfect companion in improving efficiencies. It can analyse thousands of keywords in seconds, identify content gaps faster, suggest internal linking opportunities and draft outlines. However, it struggles to understand brand voice, it doesn’t build relationships for backlinks or fully grasp commercial nuance. So, a strong strategy will continue to remain human-first.

Understanding intent

Search engines no longer rank content based purely on matching keywords; they’re designed to understand what a user actually wants when they type a query. AI is playing a significant role in this shift, helping search engines interpret context and intent between topics, meaning content needs to do more than repeat a phrase to perform well.

For marketers, AI tools can group keywords by intent, highlight commonly asked questions and reveal gaps in topic coverage. This allows businesses to create content that aligns more closely with user expectations, strengthening relevance and reinforcing traditional SEO best practices.

Keep AI in mind

With AI Overview and answer engines now a familiar part of the digital world, content must be written with this in mind. Best practices include using clear headings and getting straight to the point - you’ll want to answer the question directly. As well as including structured data and demonstrating expertise. Keep in mind, this isn’t replacing SEO but rather refining content formatting.

Authority is more important than ever

Authority and trust are both more important, certainly not less. AI systems favour factors such as credible sources, clear expertise and strong domain authority, so the foundations that make up traditional SEO must continue. That means the work you’ve done around backlinks, author bios and posting consistently is a bright green tick in the (virtual) eyes of AI.

There’s a real misunderstanding of AI SEO and its role. Many businesses are guilty of associating it with publishing mass AI-generated blogs or automating absolutely everything. The reality is AI thrives when it enhances human expertise, rather than replacing it.
